Hi just wanted to post my first spriting attempt in a long time, that i'll be using in my game Soulwake: sword of the spirit using Minkoff's Animated Battler System if everything goes good. I plan on having some more characters done within a few days or so, let me know what you think and anyway i can improve these please say so! feel free to use these if you have a NON-commercial project goin

2 more characters i'm currently working on, i decided to change Haileys shirt to pink to match up cause the green just wasnt doin it. shes leaning to the right a bit but she came out better than i thought! hope u like em. Hailey doesnt use a weapon until the World of Ruin, wheres shes like 5 or 6 years older.

Dude, the knives are too white-bright, make use of grays for blades. Maybe the background was too bright or something...

WOW, seriously they were bRIGHT, sorry it was hellla hard to see with paint.net, i got the bright white/black transparency grid instead of the grey/black that gimp2 offers, i might have to go back to gimp :? anyway thanks for pointing that out Erioul!

I got a few new poses worked out, theres actually alot more but i didnt have time to paste em all sorry, check em out

More contrast. Your palettes are quite weak. Also, more hue variation in your palettes will add a lot of life to your pixel art--never use flat gradients or pure gray. The sword guy's hair is quite nice aside from the palette, though.

thanks for all the feedback yall, I gotta learn my paint terms on google but i WILL edit the hue and such, what exactly is a gradient though? I'm just starting out with pixel art but i know im supposed to know these terms. i'm hoping to start on a minor tileset soon, any advice on matching rtp graphics when it comes to that?

UPDATE: Added (ALMOST) finished battler set of David, just some minor detail work but feel free to use in noncommercial projects! ;) if you like em. I'm really getting into pixel art so i plan on doing tons more in the future between working on other graphics and character concept art, oh yea i changed his hair a bit to make it more spikey.

A gradient is when you have a set of colors that only change by small amounts in the Lightness of HSL
And that's your problem, as peri said - MORE CONTRAST!
seriously, I did a small edit, and damn you have tons of useless shades....

here to show you, I increased contrast, did some hue variations, and lowered the color count by around 5 -8


but man otherwise, you're great! you have texture down, you can do sel-out really well... and the only place I could really see any pillowshading, was on the pants...

Keep up the good work, fix up your pallets...

EDIT:
What program are you using for spriting btw?

Took a break from the intro cutscenes to sprite some battlers, only 1 or 2 poses done at the moment, non animated (saving that for last ;) ) the devil wasnt too hard, there might be a few minor things to edit, i wasnt sure about the pumpkin though? any tips?

Without the words I'd say the composition is nice. You kinda got carried away with the glow effect, but I'm not seeing it on the scale it was meant to be seen.
The words that he is wearing could be a little more orderly. It makes the image cramped. Instead of having the whole body glow have just the words glow and take the shape of the armor.
Or another thing you could do is have the words curve along the outside of his body.

Nobodies said anything about your fallen angel sprites. I think the 2nd rank would look cooler with full sized wings and maybe more of sitting gargoyle look.

gota few more robotic sprites started on, the 3rd sprite is a good robot that you befriend and displays the vitals of enemies in battle such as hp and mp, and later you'll be able to upgrade him
