Pet project of mine. I don't think rtp is bad. It just needs some love.

Original Forest 001

Forest01 Rework Complete

Please be sure to also credit: Naramura and Mack
Piggman77 will need to be added, as I'm using a tile of his to construct the water tile.

I love the touch-up of the ground, though try to work on the edges a bit, it's easy to see where they tile. The others aren't too bad, though the bark patterns on the first tree looks somewhat odd.

Mind putting it in a screenshot as an example? I'd love to see a comparison of a full map :thumb:

I got a bit more work done on the set. Added a couple of comparable bits from Mack's rmvx tileset. (Rocks, Red Flower, Mushroom) It meshes well, and saved me some effort.

This screenie shows how the two sets compare directly. Still not completely done with it yet though.

A little nitpicky detail, but the patches of grass are too squareish for my liking. Otherwise, much more realistic and detailed than the regular tileset. I like it. Wonder how RTP characters will look on it though? Or is there another template that fits it well?

Meh, I'm not going to fidget too much with the grass. The original set is blockier.

This is just edits to give people an alternative to the standard rtp. Which is sort of icky. Glad you like it though. As far as charactersets are concerned, I don't know. I suppose people would use what works for em.

Man, just adjusting the palette makes a HUGE difference, and the other changes you've made also help a lot. Nice work!

Yah. It really does improve on whats there. RTP itself isn't bad. It just needs tweaking. I laid textures over the pieces, and adjusted tones. I'm not happy with how.......green the tree bark looks though. I'll warm it up to a brown I think.

Okee dokee, the tileset itself is finished. Borrowed a few small bits from one of Mack's RMVX tileset.

Feel free to use it. I'll do the autotiles soon.

Sir, you're awesome. I was looking for good swamp/cementary tileset and now I just found it. :D
Are you planning to make more RTP remakes?

Very nice. I did a few rtp remakes a while back. A different approach to this, though. Congrats!

It's likely. This was more just to see what the difference was, and maybe inspire people to try it. I have limited time, but I may just end up doing more. I'm not committing to any course of action however. This will be a fully functioning set though, with a host of autotiles.

Yah, I remember that I think. You were doing a cel shaded remix right?

The water tile is a pain in the arse. But should be up soon.

I really can't remember if I'm honest. It was a more cartoony style to it, so yeah you could say it was cell shaded. Twin Matrix took over my style and made an entire game from it. He did a really good job aswell!

Sojournen, what did you do to actually make this? Maybe make a tutorial and get a community initiative to make a full set? :D

Aye! I haven't posted anything here, but this has been one of my favorite threads that I've been keeping up on. Pretty cool stuff you've made here, a tutorial'd be great.

I'll do my best for a tutorial, although I don't follow the exact same procedure each time, I can give a general idea. I'll have time off work next week, I'll see what I can put together.

Dang, that's some nice work. The default RTP character set doesn't seem to clash that bad in my eyes, either.

However, did you do anything to edit the lilypads? It doesn't seem like you changed the palette, and compared to the rest of the set it looks out of place.

Big Dumb Guy
That looks really nice, especially for the swamp tileset which is awful in comparison.

Now, I didn't change the lily pads. But I will. Been working alot lately, so, I haven't had time to update yet. It may be another week or so before I get a day off. =/

Anyways, I'm probably going to attempt to do the whole rtp set like this. It'll just take time. To be honest, a tutorial wouldn't do much good because I use different techniques for different situations, and it's just to hard to try to explain in a simple tutorial. I've tried to construct a few, but so much is left out.

Anyone with a decent working knowledge of photoshop could achieve the effects I've put in here. Essentially, it's just a matter of laying textures over the tileset components, and then adjusting them accordingly. I tweak the color balance, hue/saturation and such, obviously, but there are a variety of small adjustments I make for each seperate piece, which will not be standard to each tileset. I thought I might be able to work out a general tutorial, but honestly, it`s just as easy to google for photoshop tutorials and practice yourself.

By far this is the best RTP remake I've seen. Very good use of colors and toning. If I were an artist myself, I'd do something like this, but I'm not, haha. I hope we get more tileset remakes with this approach taken, however, being one short on time myself, I also understand that would be a daunting undertaking. Regardless, very nice work there.

Also, any chance you'll be releasing the autotiles soon?

EDIT: Nevermind, saw they were posted at the top!
