There's this stray calico cat living at our house now. It has 4 kittens. It has moved them around a few times and settled in a rose bush. We've been setting food out for it. It won't turn down free food but you can't stand within 2 feet of it without it hissing at you.

But we can watch it from a window. And the kittens are so adorable. They just bump into everything and roll on top of each other.
I could watch them all day. And as soon as they hear any strange noise they waddle into the roses to hide.

The old refrigerator in my parents basement finally crapped out. Not finally as in "I'm glade it's dead" but finally as in "it's older than I am and out lived so many other appliances, it's a shame they don't make things as well as this anymore."

The thing was they had a lot of meat in the freezer. And It was a bloody mess. And they got to shoot the messenger bearing the bad news.

Stray kittens are one of my kids' favorite things. They've grown attached to a lot of the kittens in our neighborhood. It's too bad though that street cats around here have such a high mortality rate. I can't say for sure that any of the kittens they've known have survived into adulthood.

Sorry to hear about the fridge. Did you at least discover the problem before the meat went bad? Right now I'm thinking of that episode of I Love Lucy when they store the meat in the basement because the furnace is broken. (https://ultimateilovelucy.fandom.com/wiki/The_Freezer)

Backup laptop seems to have broken itself. Was doing game dev, went to the toilet and came back to a blue screen. Went for the restart option and now it sits in Diagnosis for like 6 hrs, just to tell me it couldn't start and to either 1) Restart, or 2) Advanced Options. Who knows what is in Advanced Options, as the screen was a blank blue for 30 mins before I restarted it (which also restarted the Diagnosis process).

So can't get to the desktop. Can't get pass the Diagnosis / blue screen. Can't go into bios or safe mode (kicks to the Diagnosis before it can do that). And this is my backup laptop, as I'm saving up money for repair of my gaming laptop. Oh, and I'm moving next month, so I won't be able to afford the repair for ages.

No laptop for months... It has only been about a 10 days and I'm already restless and fidgeting!

That sucks, Xhukari. What's wrong with your gaming laptop?

It didn't like being plugged in all the time; the (internal) battery bloated in size and damaged the screen. It's my first gaming laptop -- never had issues with other laptops being plugged in all the time...

I had it diagnosed at a PC repair shop (back at the end of 2019), and essentially, it has to have the battery in if I game, even if plugged in. So it isn't like other laptops where you can remove the battery...

If you don't mind having an ugly setup, you could use your gaming laptop without its screen and connect it to any other screen--including your backup laptop's screen. You just have to find the right controller board for the screen and your laptop will treat it as an external monitor. And I know they make battery bypasses, so that the laptop thinks it has a battery plugged in. I've seen them for phones, so I know they must exist for laptops too.*

Also, DIY Perks is just about the most amazing YouTube channel there is. Shows you all kinds of stuff you can do with broken laptops. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUQo7n ... zL92VesANw

* Edit: I just Googled "laptop battery bypass" and "phone battery bypass" and got very different results. It seems like a lot of people want to use their phones without batteries, and a lot of people make videos showing how. Laptops, not so much. Still, I would think the principle should be the same.

Thanks for the idea! But I think I'll pass on it. Would rather not push me luck, as it were. :)

Welp. I think the mamma cat was done with the kittens and lured then away to fend for themselves. She still shows up for food, but we haven't seen any of the kittens for a few days.

I hope the kittens are alright wherever they are.

We have new kitten developments here too. Three days ago the bawab (the all-purpose Egyptian doorman, custodian, caretaker) of the building next door found some abandoned kittens. His three-year-old son wanted to take care of them. The bawab knew the kittens were doomed and he knew that taking care of them would require more effort than he was able to exert. He let his son put them in a little cardboard box with some crumbled dry ramen noodles, but otherwise wanted to leave the kittens to their fate. And then my daughter found them.

Out of compassion for her and the kittens, I looked up a kitten-feeding formula on the internet (milk, yogurt, egg yolk, Karo syrup, and vegetable oil) and we fed the kittens. I then told her she had to take the kittens back outside. She did, but then she brought them back because she was afraid one of the stray dogs would kill them. So I gave her a camp chair and a book and the rest of the formula and I told her she could go set the kittens back down, and she could observe them from a distance until the mother cat came back. And then she brought them back because she went to inquire of the bawab when he had last seen the mother cat, and if he knew for sure that they had been abandoned, etc., and she was certain that the mother cat wasn't coming back. So I told her were taking them to the street where the cat-lady feeds all the stray cats, and that's the best place for another cat to adopt them. But then the rest of the family came home, and the other kids saw the kittens, and they all wanted to come along, and they wouldn't just allow us to drop the box there, and they had to offer the kittens to each female cat individually to see if any of them just wanted to take the kittens. Of course none of the cats just walked away with the kittens, so we had to bring them back home--where we've been bottle-feeding them and rubbing their bottoms with a wet washcloth to stimulate waste elimination every two hours for the last three days.

The kids are not responsible enough yet to take this on. I have insomnia so I've been waking up the kids through the night when they sleep through their alarms to make them feed the kittens. But then throughout the day they fight over the kittens, and they're distracted from their chores and schoolwork. And these kittens are doing nothing for us except adding more contention and more obligations in our house where we already feel stretched too thin. Today my wife and I discussed making my oldest daughter go with me to the cat-lady street and just drop the kittens there.

2 out of 4 showed up. I think the other 2 are goners.
I walked past a window tonight at 2am and saw 4 silhouettes on the lawn. But they weren't cats. They where raccoons! Big ones. I went out with a flashlight and scared them off, And there were at least 2 more that ran out of the shadows. 6 raccoons!

Status Report: All Kittens are present and sleeping by the back door waiting to be fed.

Glad to hear the kittens made it back.

I miss our house back in America. Our kids saw raccoons, foxes, opossums, and a deer in our back yard. And we just lived in the suburbs, not even next to a park or anything. One day I remember when my oldest was about a year old, she was sitting in the back yard and at least a dozen squirrels started running in her direction and she got really worried, and turned toward the house with that I'm-about-to-cry face. We never saw six raccoons at once though.

Does anyone know if there's anywhere that you can still find classic ROMs online?

I recently tried to find some of the old sites I used to go to for ROMs but all I found was a bunch of dead links and spyware.

I have a strong urge to do a Nuzlocke play through of Pokemon Leaf Green version but definitely not enough of an urge to shell out whatever amount of money it would take to purchase a working Gameboy Advance and a copy of the game.

Aaah yeah! I remember that happening... They nuked all the ROM sites for distribution! None of them wanted to risk legal repercussions. Luckily for you, I recall a site that appears to still be active -- Vi z z e d . c o m !

How it appears to have avoided issues, is that you play them online on the site; you 'rent' a game session via made-up currency it gives you a ton of per day.

I wear glasses. Always in front of a screen. The sun is my mortal enemy! So much glare... Even with anti-glare glasses and screens.

Was so bright today, my tablet screen was like a mirror with a game playing in the background...

I might gammak on my week off, if I wasn't addicted to RuneScape.

I'm an hour away from "at least 80 in all skills" and 80 artifacts away from Grandmaster....

... I'm still trying to work my way into priff. Not even done majority of the quests needed, I'm TERRIBLE for quests these days, despite how much I used to enjoy them on my old account way back in the day. I literally only just completed Heroes' Quest a couple of weeks ago (Sitting here at 90 questpoints like a BAWSS) despite having combat stats all above 90, just did it because I was bored of running ED3 and wanted a break, lol. Should probably work on the elf questline but then double exp is coming up soon so... yeeeaaaaah lol.

Dude priff is great. It's basically replaced the GE and Burthorpe for high levels.

I do that too. I'm at my worst when I've been running a lot. Lately I've been down around 30 miles a week and I'm in better control of my sleep. But when I start running over 40 miles per week, then I'm always tired, and I start taking naps every day, and I don't know if it even helps.

I haven't been to the store to restock on coke for a while. Got slight caffeine withdrawl headaches again.
My cousin's wife just had brain surgery for the second time. They removed a tumor, I want to say 3 years back. Then last year I heard it was coming back. And recently they just took out another tumor. I assume in the same spot but I never learned the details of it.
So whenever I get a headache I can't help but imagine it's a tumor.

Brain tumors are suppose to be a rare thing. But yet I can name a handful of people who have had them. None of them are blood relatives. So it's not genetic. And I think that's scarier.

Did we talk about aneurysms here? There was someone famous, an actor I think, who died of a brain aneurysm recently. He was healthy and young, and suddenly a blood vessel burst in his brain and he died. I think there are conditions that make it more likely--being overweight, smoking, stuff like that--but sometimes there are no warnings, and suddenly you're dead. That's pretty terrifying.
