SYNOPSIS:
Explore a morbid, alien world as a small, innocent NEWT. In the empty labs of the FACILITY, escaping is not as simple as finding the key to the lock. With lasers, keypads, and fingerprint scanners, to say the least, there will be countless challenges facing your freedom-seeking amphibian. Can you creatively solve your way through five difficult trials, realize your role in the sinister plot of a few evil-genius human scientists, and escape?

INFO:
Type commands to play-- they are color-coded for ease. If you need "help", then type just that!
A general hint is to look at every object you find. Often, they will reveal clues about how or where to use them.
Font should be embedded in the game, but if you're having problems with text, try downloading "Microsoft Uighur".
The game autosaves as you progress (at the start of every trial).

OTHER NOTES:
[Flash Player 10 required.]
Made in Flash CS4, coded with actionscript 3.0.
Features music from the Machinarium OST.

Enjoy!

I've always like text-based adventure, and this is a very great game. I have nothing to say except I really enjoy this. Great job and good luck with the contest!

That was the first text based game I ever played. They always sounded boring, but I had fun. I made it to the end of trial 5.

Aww, good story.

Thanks for the comments guys.
About the font issue, I thought I embedded it into the game, but if someone's having trouble seeing text, try downloading Microsoft Uighur.

Glad everyone's doing well with the puzzles! This was the first time I've tried a serious game with flash, and I have to say it worked out nicely :)

Yeah, it's not an easy game, but it's very well made : simple and efficient. I'm quite impressed.

A hint for anyone stuck would be to look at every single object. Often, this will give you clues on how or where to use them, or reveal new objects that you can use. Keep experimenting, jbrist, and you'll get it eventually.

Please make more of these. I was never into text adventures, but this is amazingly put together. The ending felt rushed, but not because it wasn't polished, but because the last few trials were pretty short.

I loved it! I was playing it at the same time as a friend and we both finished at pretty much the same momentwhich was about when we gave up and googled the last riddle. We both thoroughly enjoyed it despite never really having played any text RPGs.

Very, very nice. The only complaint I have is that the difficulty does not increase, and that the riddles are popular ones. Admittedly, making your own riddles is sort of hard, but still, most people could just google em, or will have heard of em before. Other than that, yeah, the difficulty stays the same. I figured it would get increasingly hard, but the fourth trial was easier than the third, so I don't know...

Anyway, very nice game, very fun and entertaining. :thumb:

Edit: another thing that annoyed me was having to retype the same commands a lot; something like a command history (i.e.: you press the up arrow and it gets your last command, etc, sort of like a usual terminal) would have been nice. Other than that, there was one bug, which is you can interact with objects that are in different rooms. For example, in the third trial, if I'm in the chemistry lab, I can put things on the fingers, or go in the barrel, etc.

I think that might have been deliberate. I mean it cuts down two pointless commands for each action. It happened with the table as well(You could use stuff off the ground from the table).

It was definitely easier for the player, but it didn't make much sense...

Is it such a stretch of the imagination to think that NEWT could manage to go through the door and back without you telling him to?

Well, we're reminded of the physical limitation of our newt (i.e.: a newt couldn't pick up a glass prison, a newt can't climb this or that, you need to drop this if you want to pick up that), but we can be in two places at once?

No what I mean is he leaves the room, picks the thing up, and then goes back to his spot. This is nothing an ordinary newt could not do(except of course newts can't take orders) and indeed nothing you or I could not do. No physics breaking necessary.

I'll agree that the last two trials were easier than say the third; but it's partly because the deadline was looming close and I did have to rush getting out ideas. The riddles I felt were okay. The game itself had some clues in it (if you typed "look around"), so I was hoping players would use that hint rather than give up and google an answer.

Regarding things in different rooms, it was mostly deliberate. I hoped the player would infer that the newt would walk between room and hallway as you typed commands, making it easier on the player (retyping "go door" would get annoying fast). Plus, the bodies were technically over the threshold, so you could access them in the room. For the lab bench, though, I do remember forcing you to climb on to activate the faucet or scanner.

e, the suggestion of a command history is nice; maybe if I make another game sometime, I can integrate a system like that. After all, the coding's pretty much done. All I'd have to do is think of some more interesting puzzles :)

This game is quite good, I want a sequel :)

Seeing that text games are not hard to program, the only challenge is the plots and stuff.

Funnily, I had no problem with the riddles, I was tempted to google but I didnt and I solved them, I didn't even know the riddles, thanks to the awesome "look around" option :P

I agree with etheon on the part about being two places in the same time though. Even if it's deliberate, the game should at least tell the player that the NEWT goes through the door, and follow by the command that the player input, so they will be sure that it isn't a bug.

I finished the game, that was fun !
I love the ending. Even though I saw it coming, it wasn't too obvious.
It's nice how you never do something a newt can't do.
The 3 riddles were a peace of cake compared to the rest of the game. :)
