I didn't really get a chance to participate in this contest as much as I would have liked. Maybe one day I'll get around to playing the entries. Regardless, I'm thrilled to see how many people participated. It's way more than I think any of us expected!

Oh yeah, that reminds me:

Thank you Dadev, for making the first thread on what the contest was all about (including all your awesome little graphics)

Thank you Wyatt, for pumping out that Arcade quick as a bunny,

Thank you Moog, for being black,

And thank you to the rest of the HBG Staff for putting up with me ~<3

So, I just read through the entire thread, and I have to agree with the majority of the posts. While there may have been some unhappy results, I do agree with the ordering of the games. Looking at the PDF, judge number 9 was actually harder on pretty much all of the games. In point of fact, judge number 9 is the source of the lowest scores for me as well. I was surprised that I was rated a 2 for marketing, especially as my thread was one of the examples on how to hype your game. That said, I understand the source of the scores.

I'm thoroughly impressed with most of the entries, and I'm honestly shocked I placed as high as I did, considering how completely unfinished my game is. To be honest, I'm also surprised I scored so highly in stability, because there is at least one game-breaking bug I think I never managed to squash, as well as at least two obvious but not game-breaking bugs that I encountered on almost every extended play-through of my game. (Though, if the scores in my thread are any measure, I'm guessing I'm far better at the game than most of the other people playing it)

I think, in part, some of my scores may have been influenced by the fact that I decided to host my game on one of my own domains. Specifically, one score that I'm pretty sure would have been affected is the Music one, as the biggest improvement when I switched hosts was the fact that audio loaded almost immediately. (Previously, even the tiny sound effects would take a while before playing the first time)

Overall, my biggest disappointment with the contest was my own inability to bring my entry to a finished or even partially finished state. I started about halfway through, after waiting for theory give me permission to recreate his older RM* game, and was surprised that when he did, he threw me a massive spec sheet for a sequel. However, due to time constraints, lack of activity from theory, and the fact that every day of the final week of the contest I had either a full day of college classes or a full shift, plus overtime, at work, I never managed to bring the game anywhere near the plans I had for it.

Due to my major disappointment with my own entry (I believe I placed far higher than I should have, considering the state of the game), I plan to continue work on it until I AM satisfied with it. The initial spec sheet theory sent me was very very light on graphics descriptions, but he later sent a revised one that also included a good number of graphical improvements to the game that do not affect the intended style. I plan to do my best to fully implement both spec sheets and release the full game at some point. Not only is this the first game I have worked on and brought as far as it is, but I will be learning a significant amount of new stuff while I work on it further.

Anyway, enough of that. Congrats to the winners, all of them! I'm sorry for those of you who didn't make it to the top twelve, but there's only so much we can do. I'm hoping that the next contest we hold can be this successful, and, depending on time constraints and medium, you guys might find me judging rather than entering the next contest.

You know, I was shy to admit, but when I donated to HBGames, it was not long after I joined the forum, and I donated without awareness of the money being a contribution to this contest. I thought the donation was just for general support of the forum.

So when I saw my name on the contest banner I was completely surprised and baffled on how that happened. Is it because I donated? But HBGames has been around for quite a while, those names can't be the only ones that have donated over its existence. Did my name get randomly drawn for being on the banner? Is it because I'm new? Is it a sign that I should join the contest? (Sorry I bailed >>)

It took me like all the way till the last week of the contest to figure out where the names came from.

I believe it's anybody who donated while the fundraiser was going. For a list of anyone who's ever donated (and accepted the badge),

memberlist.php?mode=group&g=8

I'm not sure if awesome bros show on this list:

memberlist.php?mode=group&g=61

Although at one point sponsors were given out regularly as contest prizes (we stopped that to keep sponsorships special). They were also given to ex-staff members. Probably ~125 of that list actually sent in money (or were paid for by somebody).

But then people have donated for other things too, like to individual people, etc. Plus there's those who donated to RMXP.net before it went down in 2005, I'm not sure they show.

We should do a horribly sickly History Thread! for all the newcomers lol

All the names on the list are of people who gave more than $20 during our fundraising for the contest.
I would've liked to have put down the names of every sponsor we've ever had, but there isn't enough room on the whole index to list them :)

I couldn't find any of the bugs you mentioned. I don't think anyone else did, either.
Despite your saying that the game was in an unfinished state, it luckily did not seem that way to us judges :)
G2:R, IMO, was a good example of a game in the categories of innovation and sound. The graphics were simple, but aesthetic and congruent. The marketing was pretty well done. There was challenge to the game, however I feel the "fun" category was your biggest detriment, as collecting yellows felt ungratifying and it was quite difficult to play as a single player (even if the game was meant for 2 ... it felt somewhat pointless to have a second player at all). If "fun" were a more weighty category (and, thinking about it, perhaps it should have been -- that's the whole point of playing a game, right?), you would have probably placed lower than you did.

But anyway just accept your win and smile and say "whee" and take it as a hint that you should keep working on it :)

I noticed I wasn't on that list even though I donated $50. :shades:

Ah crap.

Well,
Originally, I made the PSD of the contest header at home, using the information on PayPal that had been updated on 3/1.
Just as I was launching the contest, I noticed that Tuna had donated money later in the day on 3/1. I was at work, so I had to re-create all the sub-text there, using the PNG.
When I made the latest header a few days back, the one with "CONTEST RESULTS" in it, I had forgotten that there were multiple versions of the PSD, and used the one that I had made at home, which didn't have Tuna's name on it.
If you notice, Mega Flare's name is spelled "Megaflare". I had it updated on the version I made at work, but didn't use that version.

So,
Sorry, Tuna,
Sorry, Mega Flare,
and sorry, to anyone who had to read that silly explanation :)

@Glitch: It's interesting how you seemed to have the same struggle I had... I had no clue until now, and while I feel with you, I'm definately relieved I'm not the only one who couldn't live up to their own expectations. But I hope you and theory will continue working on what you got there, as I think it's quite interesting.
And as soon as you get 360° joystick input in there, it'll actually be a lot more playable! :thumb: </randominput>

EDIT: And what I forgot: I also had my game hosted on a high-performance web server (in Germany, though), and didn't have any problems myself or been reported to me. I also preloaded the sound effects, so that might have something to do with it.
I guess the dropbox alternative is nice for those without servers, but not the performance approach. That being said, did anyone of the Arcade submittors notice any differences when playing it from the hbgames.org host as opposed to dropbox?

I'm sort of curious. Who here has yet to receive the license they won, if they accepted it? I haven't received any emails about it yet, and I'm getting sort of worried that it might have been filtered out by my provider. (Sometimes, I hate Cox)

I figured as much, when it came to showing my plans versus my actual results. If you had seen the initial spec sheet, you would see that what I turned in was just a tiny fragment of the planned game. Once I get home, I'm going to comment the hell out of my behaviors, including commenting every condition for conditional statements, in the hopes of finally squashing the remaining few bugs. (They're all the result of logic holes in my conditions which cause behaviors to conflict with each other)

Then, once I get everything tidied up, I'll work on implementing the rest of the game, piece by piece. Once I get started on that, I plan to make a project dev thread to share progress and get crit and such. Because I would honestly love to finish the game.

Also, for those who wanted to play GREEN (as in, the original), I found a copy. You can find it here. Please note that it's for RPG Maker XP, and I'm not entirely sure whether or not it requires the RTP.

I will notify you when licenses are bought. We are going to be buying everything at once and one of the winners has yet to respond.
I'll give him a day or two longer to respond before just buying all the other prizes and postponing his.
Next time you have a concern in regards to this matter, please contact me via PM.

Sorry, I had re-read your original PM saying not to ask you until ten days had passed, and decided to ask other people if they had received theirs. I also apparently missed the blurb Tuna quoted.

Update: We're working on getting all the prizes out; bear with us. One of the winners isn't getting back to us, no matter how we try to contact him (PM, various email addresses).
We're also working out our bulk purchase with Scirra.
Thanks for your patience!!

I downloaded GREEN.exe and I have the RTP, but I get an error saying that

Script font installer can't load fileutils.rb.

It looks like the font is there but RMXP can't load it. The font is in \Fonts.

Any clues? I ran this as administrator.
