OK, in light of the recent hackings... I came up with this idea
What if we could have the posts automatically add themselves to the edit history, so if this happens again, we'll have the backup, and the edit histories?;)

Well, I guess that sounds like a sweet idea - I mean, it could work. But how would you do it? I just think that you'd just have to stop them from hacking somehow...i dunno. Oh well, its a good idea none the less...;D

That still wouldn't fix everything. Alot of posts will still contain the same message. The reason of which is because, the only way you could restore a post to the previous one, would be if you had previously edited it. The cracked messages do not contain an edit history.

There is no use in starting a new topic on this subject. Please refer to "Stop gap mesures" or "crybaby hacker".

Well both of those topics are locked, Danton, and this hasn't been suggested before. And I think his point is that if posts did automatically have an edit history, then if the same thing happened in the future, the cracked messages would have an edit history.

Right, but this is pointless. There is no need for an other topic on this subject. I'd close it if I were you :) .

Well... you're not :P

He brings up a valid point that I think should be recognized.

Geez Danton you're thicker then Jennifer Lopez...
This is completely different from the "We've been hacked, but we'll survive Viva La RMXP.org" topics. He's actually suggesting something that would help in case it happens again.

I say tighten security, backup weekly, and MAKE IT SO SPONSERS/SUBSCRIBERS CAN DOWNLOAD OUT THE LDM! [/rant]

Anyway good idea.

Well, I got another idea, this time for help recovering. the subscription e-mails sent give a copy of the reply. We could post what they said in another topic, or somehow get the info around... Or use jstreet's idea and allow paying members/mods/admins backup the site onto their hd. Though it'd have to be just text (Though the image links/tags could be there, for easier reposting), so the file sizes wouldn't be as high... (Don't know if that's what you ment by 'download the ldm'). Well, there's my second two cents, so that would be my four cents^_^

First Danton stop trying to be an admin
Second This is indeed a good idea since Erk is the legal holder of his vb licence i sugest he would post this idea at the vb forums on thier offical site who knows maybe someone did already make it

We're already making our own backups (which can only be manually deleted, so they are never overwritten or automatically disposed of) three times weekly in response to the hack and the subsequent problems getting a backup out of our host.

Agreed.

And this seems like a good idea.

Perhaps you should stay on topic about the edit histories or I will have to close this.

Ooo scarey admin italics!

Umm I was just ranting about the dling thing inukai. It's kinda unrelated to this topic.

Ccoa, 3 times a week works too :P, but that might become a bit of a tedious task after a while. No? It think you should take the site down temporarily at the end of the month after a finally backup, do some routine maintenance, and bring her back up.

Kip, although I have heard of you, I am not attempting to be admin. First off, the correct term would be "moderator". And second, this has been mentionned a few times already, and many people already know this; including Erk.

Essentially what you're asking for is a live backup as things are posted. First, it doesn't make sense to have this in the edit history table, since that is for (wait for it...) post edits. A new table would need to be created, and the code to add an extra copy of every single post to it (and update it when that post is edited) would have to be written. That would 1) be a pain in the butt to implement, 2) be ineffecient, it could slow down response times of posting and would effectively double the size of the database (posts is by far the largest table), and 3) Still be all the eggs in one basket, more or less, because it would still be in the same database and hosted on the same server. Just because the little script kiddie who followed instructions written for an idiot 12-year-old could only manage to damage one table does not mean that will always be the case. The next "hacker" could be much more capable and/or destructive.

All of that to preserve what would be, at the very most, 2 days worth of lost posts, if the worst happened right before a scheduled thrice weekly backup (and jstreet, they're run automatically, no effort involved for the admins except cleaning out the really old ones).

Well would it take a whole new table? I don't really know how it works, but rather than having it basically post twice (which I think is what you meant?), have it basically edit the post instantaneously when you first post. Granted, it only protects against a small hack like this one, but I mean depending on how easy/hard it is, would it be worth it?

You could do like i have done on some of the large forums i have managed. setup a slave database and set vb to post to both... Unless the cracker is very familiar with how to get to both databases, s/he can't ruin the boards. I've been hacked/cracked a few times and had someone do a similar thing. I just wrote over the master with the slave's data.

There is also of course manual editing of all posts by the creator...

meh, automatically adding an edit history to every post wouldn't really be a whole lot, as Ruby pointed out, you still have to manually go through and restore the posts.
And as someone who has had to do this a lot, it's not a fun task. You can't just choose "Revert back to this edit point" and it's flipping annoying to restore links, images and spoiler tabs.

So I'm happy with the fact that Erk, Ccoa and Dz have set up to just run their own backups on a regular time period and not override them.

Since we have now got a long running, faithful history of database backups, and I am doing a decent job of making sure I keep a relatively recent one on my own hard disk rather than backing it up just to the server, the forum is now pretty much water tight. In a worst-case scenario, if ALL our site data was somehow deleted from our server in, say, ten minutes, we would STILL have all the post data saved from no more than a week ago. The ideas that have been tossed around here are good, don't get me wrong, but they don't really give us anything we don't already have, nor do they add any convenience or double-safety. Our time would be far better spent working on getting the site up to professional standards, as it is presently a bit of a sham.
