Definitely good enough that you don't have to fret over presentation and you can move on to game systems now.

Cool cool. Yeah I hate shadows. Will probably do my own overlays instead, not quite dynamic lighting but not far off. Not yet though. For now might just erase most shadows (and fix that wall).

Ever since I saw this video, I've been entertaining the idea of using the Blood Maidens in some capacity.
I'd take no issue with that, also speaking of, a certain someone got me Kyon's portraits yesterday

Also I have a decent amount of lore on all three blood maidens. I'll drop it in spoilers.

In other news, I did some much needed anatomical fixes and touchups to Flannel and Solistace of Junked.

Their faces have remained the same, this was simply a bunch of anatomy fixes.

Started the day by writing throw-away dialogue. And then proceeded to develop writing strategies for different types of scenarios. I'm too visual and action oriented. I spend too much mental energy trying to adapt gestures. It's easy to imagine an awkward handshake between character. But, you know, I can't do that in a game with limited assets. So it's got to be something verbal. And I just don't have a mind for speechcraft.

I can pretty much always see my characters and how they'd interact. My games are a very still version of how vividly the events are in my head. Motly because to make my games how my head portrays I'd have a shit ton of animation to do.

As it is I went and made eight more emotional portraits for Svoli.

Of course in game the ears and pose varies. Faceset is a good guide for faces, but not for body language.

This is the crying emote, which I'm quite proud of.

Here's a bunch in video format.

That all takes place after the end of demo 2, meaning that- yes... Demo 3 is slowly but surely being worked on.

I like the crying animation too, Biz.

Here's what I did yesterday. I still have a bunch of frames to make, but now that I have the look down, I think I can make more frames faster today.

Good thing about not naturally producing melatonin is so long as i sleep enough, when I sleep and when I am awake matters little.

So, BIG update on several fronts.

Fantasia
Is literally two files away from the point I can fine-tune and then release Demo 2. Pjcr got me Tristy Angelic and all her poses, as well as Esperia's two remaining poses. So now all that remains is Kira and Wi Hellrider's Cloak.

Screenshots: In Spoilers

Furthermore, Jake has continued to work away at the OST.

Akra Olna's now got her hero mode / battle theme.

Junked
HUGE progress in a multitude of areas. All Skills are now done and assigned to their classes, several enemies implemented, states are done, and the interface has been largely upgraded and worked upon. Iconset has been largely edited to fit in the grungy theme of the game, and now most menu commands have a relevant icon beside them.

All the enemies, including Junko, are using placeholder battlers right now, eventually i'll be drawing them myself, a like the protags.

I've also been thinking and ruminating on Seraphim... the eroge game I plan to make, probably use a different twitter account for it to avoid people getting sudden lewds in my regular feed.

I tried melatonin to shift my hours over and it worked for a day. But the trick to resetting you circadian rhythm is when you eat. Or rather, don't eat. A few more days and it won't matter and I can sleep whenever and however long I want.

I've been studying drama lately. I'm thinking it's a step to get me over this hurdle with my dialogue. Developing writing strategies. I'll share my deeper thoughts if it leads me anywhere. I'm not feeling very bright lately. Looking back on my older project is also cringe inducing.

Oh yeah, @coyotecraft I might have something that'll help- I actually long ago did a decent amount of character development on Sven in a comic.

I called it 'Pigs and Perpetuity' and it's... not great but it does have a LOT of character.
https://imgur.com/a/8B8Kk
It takes place in the one year we don't see of the Perseverance Union. Turnas out they get up to quite a lot, mostly doing trade with the Red Man Chests for more of their red cordial, or more Pep's, Sped's and no one fucking else's because that shit is fucking awful.

Interesting side notes, Splode plays an active (and kinda badass) role near the end, Saxxis smokes and Sven actually shows us his eyes. Esperia also just suddenly has a headset out of nowhere to communicate with Saxxis.

Pep and Nola are incredibly well written and characterized, even with the shitty art and pad panelling and some of the words being quite difficult to read.

As for game dev, I rewrote a lot of early main story scenes to be more brief, the beach and the beginning house segment with Koko are noticably shorter so that you can get into optional events quicker.

I also rewrote a lot of Yi's dialogue to be harder hitting and ruthless, and less insensical, now instead of playing around like she did in day 5 which was quite out of character, she is instead incredibly malicious, and only allows Yasondre and Kyoshi to remain due to wanting to be a good influence for the girls, stating that they will have to be liked, and rings yasondre to tears several times, and shows a weaker more broken side in both Yasondre and Kyoshi to more greatly establish how horrific and difficult Yi is to stand against, to that end I've also reworded a lot of Yi's dialogue in the events before her final battle, and cut a bunch of shit that was meaningless. It's both shorter and more impactful now.

Examples in videos below!

You've showed it to me before at some point. I don't recall when or where I was at in development or what ideas it gave me.
I can't remember what, if anything, that I've shared. I have a really bad habit of writing out long posts outlining my story, and then instead of posting it I copy it into word document.
It helps me figure out where to go next. I think when I started out I wanted to explore Sven's personality and relationship with his family and other characters. But now I'm just writing to explain some of the lines he says in Perseverance, and what his mentality was for staying behind.

I recently tried a open-close bracket method. Well, Brandon Sanderson calls it the bracket method. I'd call it a chiastic structure. I'm just a sucker for parallelism and symmetry I guess.
I think I've mention this deer character, a "hart" that's very obviously connected to Esperia in some way. Drives an ambulance. collecting organs. He's important to the story, but I only recently figured out - by bracketing keywords - how I was going to connect what he does to the overarching themes. That is, he's preserving things on ice to be transferred. Preserving a future and transference are a recurring thing in this story. At least they're suppose to be. It's easier said then done.
Getting the characters to talk about something in a particular way is very tricky. How do you lead into a character waxing poetically about the nature of ice? Or anything.
I've found that my dialogue is mostly puns and a very logical train of thought to get from A to B. But they're devoid of emotions. Drama.
So that's what I'm working on.

As much as I love to hate Final Fantasy 13, I think it does drama well. Or well enough. I hate that every other line is them screaming "Serah!" but they get the emotions across and signal tension between characters.

The problem with my writing is that everyone is indifferent and stoic. I got to inject conflict somehow. But because it's a dream/mental realm and everyone is a stranger. It's hard to make sparks fly.

conflict isn't super hard to make between a moral character like Sven and Esperia. Think about what Sven has shown to love, his dad (who Esperia has largely hurt) his mother (who he knows fears for her family's livelyhood because OF esperia), his bro (the red rascal who he sees as better than him) and just the world around him (a harsh environment for a sensitive boy).

What may help to know is that Sven is courteous and kind, a thing green symbolizes, alike how red symbolizes passion, there's this whole color rainbow of emotional extremes, so for instance blue means independence and since the moajority of esperia's outfit is blue along with her eyes, she's quite independant, and in a way in which is more negative than postive, the darker a color, the more negative, the more pale a color, the more positive. This is why wholly good characters like Svoli, Rolly and say- Renae, are in very bright or pale colors. Sven also fits this bill, he has red which is passion, but a positive kind, green which means courtesy, a bit og gold/yellow, yellow means just.

See a character like Nola who is pretty much a majority of black and yellow, she's all about justice, but in perserverance her way of meting out justice is in a negative fashion, usually killing or terrifying those she seeks to bring justice upon, so that fits. Then look at warthog, who is entirely black and red, i.e. passionate hatred, which describes him to a T.

orange means vigilance, purple means pride (kara is an example of positive pride, because she's basically white and purple mostly, with some blue and a little black slooshed in, which fits well into her character.

It's a shame my document on color theory in character design because it was somewhat a good insight into how i write characters. I think pink was truth/deceit, being pale pink meant you were more likely to tell the truth, where as a habitual liar would have either black and pink design or just dark pink, which is largely Xali's shtick, as she is incredibly disingenuous.

For instance, Svoli has a bit of pink in her design, and her coat is mostly white, which means she's very unlikely to ever lie, and she doesn't in the span of the game.

Hope that helps! Also my bad on reposting that comic.

BIG NEWS!!!
Fantasia is now officially ready to release, I have all the files. Now here is a trailer for ya~!

I will continue to bug test, fix stuff and junk like that.

But what I'm really struggling with is the dialogue. What I end up writing reads more like a fairy tale than a drama. You know like, Little Red Riding Hood goes to her grandma's house. The lines in fairy tales are a kind of in-the-moment banter that makes it entertaining. Like "My, what big eyes you have!" is sterile. It's not expressing meaningful emotions or character relationship. A fix might be, "Your eyes are really dilated and yellow! I should get a doctor right away. " and the wolf would say, "No! I mean, stay. I'm fine. I can see you perfectly."
Content Hidden

It's better when Red is aware of the danger and tries to make excuses to leave, but the wolf keeps bidding her closer and closer.
Even though I understand the theory behind it I don't know how to make the decision of what emotion or conflict to portray. That might sound stupid. But like, what if the wolf impersonated little Red instead? What if Red impersonated the wolf? If I was writing towards the plot point of the Woodsman Axing the Wolf - does that mean Red did something to frame the wolf? Does she feel guilty? Was the wolf completely innocent. Which way do I go? If I flip a coin, I don't know if I can justify it. But maybe applying reason to emotions is futile in the first place.

Writing emotional tugs is difficult, especially if you yourself have never been in such a situation. It's something I have gotten much better at, the end of PFC shows it when I execute it pretty well.

Characters have to be lovable or relatable in some way, otherwise a drama won't work because a character sterile of imperfections is not a relatable or often remotely likeable character.

I give all of my characters weaknesses, for example, Pep is reckless and foolish to even out his good qualities some, and you've read perseverance so you know that every character is flawed to some degree, even Esperia who seems basically unbeatable for almost six whole acts of the game.

People relate to suffering, social outcasting or feeling alone or forgotten, making your character sympathetic is an incredible way to hook people in. This shouldn't be hard to do with Sven.

On my progress, did a thorough bugtest and run through all the way through to the beginning of destiny towers,I found a lot of typos, misused grammar and even some cases of text bleeding into the next textbox. I was so thorough that clearing disk 0 took me about 6 hours... THAT'S HOW MUCH CONTENT IS IN THIS THING.

It's starting to feel a bit more like a game!

Now you have an AP bar!
  • If you don't have 100% AP, you cannot leave the room.
  • If there's monsters in the room, and you've hit 0% AP. A random number of them (randomly selected) will attack you.
  • If you leave a room, all remaining monsters will attack you before you leave.

I've began work on the quickslot equipment, so you can switch between 2 equipped items/weapons without it costing you AP. I decided to reuse that coin-flip I had as my avatar on here, but it was too small. So I've spent most of today making one twice the size (and is now my avatar).

Guess it's time to change my avatar too.
Eventually I'll have a cleaner portrait art.

The other thing about writing for video games is engaging the player with branching dialogue choices. But Sven isn't a silent hero, and there's no alignment system or dating sim affection points. So instead I'd like to have secret mantles you can obtain through conversations choices. You can replay the scene at anytime, if I haven't mentioned before I'm imitating Ar Tonelico and Ar No Surge's Cosmosphere/Genometrics stages.
Example

Every location has 1 or more scenes associated it. Like Scene 1 and Scene 3. Of course you have to progress normally first. But afterwards you can replay Scene 1 and make different choices to obtain a CGI or Mind Gem. In those games you have Dive Points. So obtaining a CGI means coming back later when you have enough points to "be lewd" or some other option.

You'd think I'd have an illustrated map of my own by now that I could show off. But I don't know how many scenes I'll have or what the scope of the locations are. I only have sketches of some landmarks. Like, is a castle just an icon? Or will it be it's own map, with a gate, throne room, dungeon, ect...
3 months ago I would have told you what the significance of the castle was. Today I'd tell you I've cut the castle out entirely. Concluding that worldbuilding in a null world is weak sauce. Tomorrow I'll tell you I've picked up the castle again, but it's all about canon balls.

Scenewriting is my guilty pleasure when I'm feeling down i just write a scene i may not even ever establish or use. A lot of easter eggs in Menagerie that could only be accessed by turning on the FUNFILTER switch (id 666) to on would enable. There was an event on tekerlek in the tavern's basement with spooky and fyori, and another much more developed one in Esperia's limbo, accesed at Heldath.

I actually made a video containing these.

So there's that.

Also Fantasia is release, I'm not making a post just yet cause that's a lot of work and I have to help my fam move tomorrow, and then I have to move the next day, if you want it you can go for it here: https://gamejolt.com/games/fantasia/317757

I don't remember if I've dug around in Menagerie before. But in one of your other games, inside Esperia's pocket dimension I believe is somekind of tea garden party with Fyori.
This is something of a "backroom" I considered putting in Censor's Bar or "The High Noon Hotel". The Coyote character makes a lot of suggestive hints about what's back in order to keep Sven/the player away. Like 2 Girls 1 cup. Tea Bagging. But in reality it's really innocent. A running gag that contrary to all the evidence - it's not a brothel.

At some point in my story development, Sven was unlocking doors in Esperia's unconscious to either answer why he's there, or to take advantage of the situation and gather intelligence. But the answer had more to do with Naxon. I don't know if I could draw a diagram or not because it's like Inception + Skynet. And there's a timelime. Yes, time lime. You'd think it would be a lemon, as fanfiction go, but that's part of the running gag. And this is how you know it's outside of biztopia canon because otherwise the time curve would probably be bananas. Probably? Probably. But I mean it's all pulp.

I've said too much.

Ah ya, that's intelligence. The DATE scenes I planned but never really implemented.

I do time travle the same way chrono trigger does it, where everything that does happen will happen, but loopholes can be used to make the outcome differ. Most of my instances of time travel are done with stable time loops, there's a fw good examples of these.

1. Remember when you fight Fatty, Fyori, Gerald and Spooky in Intel? Well that same battle takes place in menagerie except with the actors and their skills n stuff inversed, both experience it in the same way, and so the fabric of time isn't questioned because it stable time loops are accounted for.

2 Another much grandiose example takes place shortly after the events of Hellcat, which takes place not long after PFC. Corporation XVI is like 'oh shet we need more time' but Anathema (an early follower who can adjust her own time (but not travek through time, kinda like sakuya izakoi from 2hu) notions that they would have plaenty of time if they went all back 500 years, and from there could gather more followers and preach it much eariler. So they do this, which is why you as fyori can fight people like esperia and naxon in menagerie, even though Naxon would have only recently become a lich, and Esperia wouldn't have been close to born yet- they land in at 1512, and for the next 100 or so year, work on stabilizing the fourth walls energies, which is why whenever a Corporation member showed up, static would follow, becuase the fourth wall is very dangerous, and they were attuning it to a fragile dimension while trying their best not to alert the gods.

After the events of menagerie, several (eventually all) of the menagerie members join the shadowed corpoation, and fyori gets up to a bunch of mischief with both Mad E Lin and Esperia, and esperia after a while offers her a place in the corporation, and yeah so they got a bunch of members this way completely under the goddess' noses- once each character who had travled back was born, they'd stay in the equation unsolved until their canon self live their life, died, and got an offer from the corporation and travelled back, after this point, they'd re-enter the fold, which then sets up the events for Intelligence proper. Again, stable time loop, as nothing much changed in the history. All that did happen was several well know heroes or villains 'disappeared', Safael himself notes that Lyza vanished without a trace, in reality, she become invisible, alike most of corporation xiv, so the demigods could no longer trace her because the history origin had written had change, and origin cannot actually see what he has not made be. There's a reason both twins state Niirgo was a failure, they made a couple huge mistakes in his programming.

Granted, this is not a common way of using time travel, as this actually effected events.

3. There's plenty of examples of stable time loops in Menagerie too, like spooky and past spooky talking to each other. Both characters would do the same actions, just at different times to speed up production of their 'build'.

I basically mastered an understanding of time loops, time travel and paradox-less timelines. In my universe travelling through time is something the cosmos has accounted for so everything is already sort of going to happen how it will in the end.

Like if you try to go back through time to say, wipe out the dinosaurs because those fucking lizards are assholes, and then just hurl a giant meteor from space, then you're keeping in line with the history, and achieved the conclusion you sought, even the fabric of reality of itself didn't want those fuucks around- though to be more real, Yi was the sender of the meteor, because she found then rude and uncouth and because they dominated earth no species would get a chance to really outwit them well. But even with this the same result would be achieved.

For people who do try to recklessly create paradox's to see what will happen, the universe or yi herself will intervene and erase them outright. Contradictions to the grand scheme of the simulation are not something that is taken lightly. There's also the thing that mortals are not meant to possess a way to time-travel.

Another good example is, say you went back to kill hitler, as a classic go to. You'd likely end up being beaten to it by who actually assassinated him. Hitler was a well defended man and was in history hard to find.

Yi has been behind a lot of events in history that hve been retold to omit her involvement as she desired, the versions of history that omit not her involvement is called the esoteric history, and it's a large partion of what the books Tristy, lazarus and Kyoshi has called 'Fragmentary Esoteric Diagnostics covers, as well as how to trace fragments of an MCP after its been shattered and diagnosing extents of both. Beyond very advanced technological analogies. Given that the book is wirtten in MindFields, M.F. lazarus' personal font, it's a hefty read and a near intelligible one except to galaxions like him, Tristy has just decoded and learned it by now.

Well my story is not quite a paradox. If anything it's correcting, or explaining, a continuity error. Since in the older versions of Perseverance and in written plot summaries you have Sven sacrificing himself by giving his jacket to pep and nola as a parachute. But not in Full Clearance. They jump and are save by you-know-who instead. Sven just stays behind like "I understand now. The Fool and The World must escape the tower"
So I'm pretty much writing to explain that cryptic line. Exploring the possibility that he was aware of some alternative. And that there was more reason for him to stay behind. I believe I came up with that before I had played the completed Fantasia Disk 1. The reality the twins and the simulation just gives Sven another reason to not change fate - assuming he was aware or sense the gravity of it all.
You know I haven't decided on a title either. But "Premonition" is up there, along with Preservation and Perplexity. Purrrplexity. The list keeps getting longer.

Having that as a story goal though hardly makes for a good story. I've been convincing myself that I've painted myself into a corner with this abstract setting and circumstances. But turns out there are a number of visual novel Adventure games that have a cast of stranger in bizarre circumstances. I'm not a connoisseur of these games, but luckily other people are and I can get a feel for the conventions without needing to play them.

Turns out a lot of them combine mind transference with timeline jumping as an excuse to replay events with new knowledge. The character is aware they are "looping". How it's explained in-game ranges from psychic powers to alien technology. The mechanic itself is more of a subplot because the real story is either a murder mystery or a psychological suspense.
I kinda knew time-traveling consciousness was a thing, but I didn't realize it had become a basic genre convention.

I feel a little foolish. Like. "Surprise! My secret ingredient was water."
"Huh? How else are you going to make Spaghetti?"
"Spaghetti? No. See, future Sven was an impasta all along."
Image
"Stop it. You're scaring me."
"But it's funny because Naxon...no you're right. I should have gone with curry."
"I'm afraid to ask."
"Picture it. A Perseverance Gaiden story. Sven delivers a message from another timeline where he's the fortunate cookiedoe. Get it? Fortune Cookie? And his message is: Keep calm and curry on."
Image

I'm only half joking. I haven't spent the past year writing food puns. But now I'm picturing Naxon consulting with the Oracle like
"Show me the best timeline!" and Esperia is like, "Careful, the speech recognition feature is terrible" and the oracle is like "Searching for: The zest time lime..." and Naxon is all "Wow! There's a timeline where I'm the best?" And Esperia says "Not Best. Zest. You're the zest. What does that even mean?" "It means I found a way to make the Perseverance Union serve me!"

Next month is a visual novel jam on itch.io, they have it every March it seems.
I wrote a visual novel for a different jam a few years back. I didn't publish it and only shared it with a few people because it was more like a scribble of a story. But it's interesting that I also wrote a time travel plot then too. It wasn't a mechanic. It was just that the story ends by going back the the beginning.

Anyways, it was definitely nothing to be proud of. And nothing I want to put on display. However its nice to reflect on it. Especially after this past year of barely producing anything. I mean I've got these word documents that I toil in, and I'm really proud of stuff that's in them. But it doesn't compare to having something else that's complete and whole.

My advice would be to see if you can't make a demo for this game jam based on your current idea of Pastaverance as I am now calling it.

That way you may be motivated to make something that can be built onto.

Also side note: I updated the thread in Fantasia with new screenshots, character bios, trailers, download and more.

Lastly: while waiting for the final files, I made some changes to IA's dialogue in disk 0 to make her more frightening- more ruthless and eager to hurt. Here below are three video samples showing just this!

Enjoy~

Been working on a gaussian filter that operates in cubic space for blending colour samples across an area. You'll see it in an update soon.

In my game, I think the closest I have would be a material that takes into account pixel world location and normal, and applies a triplanar projection to a tiling noise texture (pre-generated in GIMP), and then I use the noise texture as a linear interpolation alpha between color variations. It looks great in my opinion, but it's just one 2D texture, and the players aren't digging up the landscape.

UDK/UE3 doesn't have built-in support for 3D "textures." (I don't even know what format that would be.) I once saw a 3D noise texture being used to animate a liquid surface. It was really simple--once the 3D texture was created and implemented. The texture was simply panned in the Z direction, and the XY data was drawn on the surface of the liquid. That could 100% be done with a flipbook. But with an actual 3D texture, you could also slice it along the XZ or YZ plane, and get--for example--color variation throughout a cave system.

Literally dusting off my drawing tablet. That's bad.
So after about 30mins I got this. Outlines and shading are still rough. Just getting an impression of the character art. She's suppose to have a midriff showing. But that's kinda hard to do with these proportions. Got to make decisions about what details to sacrifice when scaling down. Idk, a midriff makes her look sporty. But colored hems lines are more more fashionable, and would otherwise just be plain cloth.

And another...Fun fact, you always fold a kimono left over right, except when dressing the dead. I read that somewhere.

Edit:
Nani?! GIMP encountered a critical failure and closed. But luckly it was able to recover what I was working on. Phew. I dunno about the colors on this one.

And another one. Taking a few artistic liberties. (note to self: try a skirt version)

Do All The Kitsunes! (I think Cathy might be a cat)

And I think Renae might be some kind of retriever. I feel like I'm losing my fire at this point.

[^ These are all BizMonkey's Characters FYI ^]
Just playing around now. I had this Red Renamon I sketched years ago with a Leaf Hat and an eyepatch. Thought I'd try to sprite it. Might make for a nameless faceless NPC. It's not very harmonious with the girls that are all bright with pastels.

Maybe some faceless bad guys?

And you don't seem to understand.

Yesterday's sugar rush has crashed. The stars have moved out of alignment. Whatever it was, I'm laying in bed questioning my motivations. Wondering if completing this work will bring me any satisfaction. Is the cake a lie?
Aperture Science, man. Aperture Science.

Remember, the Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day is the perfect time to have her tested.

I remember making this lava material a long time ago. Years ago, maybe? And then I decided I couldn't introduce it too early in the game because it was too dramatic. Lava belongs in final boss levels. I am now finally working toward Himeko Sutori's endgame, so I feel fine with lots of lava now.

I also made those arches. The material is scale-independent, so I can make those arches really big or really small, and their level of detail remains the same. The rim lighting is built-in. It might be cool to give it an orange glow from underneath (and I do that in the lava caves where I don't have to worry about dynamic time-of-day lighting), but I think it looks good enough here.
