Brain Zap is a puzzle video game published and developed by Coral Live! (‘kó-rə-līv) for the iOS and Android OS. It will be released in the Apple Market on July 1, 2012.

In Brain Zap, tests are done in order to measure a brain’s amount of neural connections or brain saps. The greater the amount of saps, the smarter the brain is or better its reaction time.

This is a commercial project.

Contest
You need to draw a mascot for Brain Zap. There is no preferred art style. The only requisite is for the artwork to be big enough for an iPhone app with retina display. The current iPhone 4S resolution is 640x960.

I was thinking of making the mascot a neuron, but that's up to you. His name is Dr. Albright, and he's an assistant neurologist.

These two images show examples of pet characters I think would fit with the game. I borrowed them from Google Images, and they will not be included in the final version of the game. The artwork should be capable of fitting in the right hand side of the screen, perhaps covering a bit of the text box.

You can definitely turn in more than one submission. In fact, the more the merrier. If there's only one submission, and I don't like it, then you won't win by default. I'm sorry.

Also, if you want, you can turn in a sketch. If you win, you'll get payed $25 for the contest and $25 for finishing the sketch. This way you guys can also turn in rough drafts or works in progress.

If you have any questions, we can discuss them here or in private. I'm totally open to discussion.

I raised the prize a bit to see if there's any more interest. If I like the design, there's a good chance I'll be hiring you to do additional work for the game.

Graphic designers hate contests. Unless its for a big company and guaranteed to be seen by a lot of people its not worth it. It like, Hey Instead of hiring an artist and paying their rate we'll get a bunch of artists together and only pay one of them whatever we want *evil laughter*. Most of the time there's nothing stopping them from changing your design or using it for something else because you're agreeing to their terms. What rights do the Artists keep? Designers don't hand copyrights over until they've been payed. It protects them from the client running off with it or taking their design and have someone else finish it cheaper. Sometimes they reserve the rights to edit the design so even small changes like color have to be done by the artist.

Is this a legit contest? Can someone win by default from only one person entering and its a design you can't use like a stick figure? Will you still pay them $20? Is it a payment or a prize?

I dig what you're saying Coyote, and I 100% agree with you, but Juan's just a li'l fella, not a corporation looking to steal all your creativity, and he just wants a drawring of a character. No need to be that wary about it.

But yeah Juan you may want to add some more stipulations on there so people know exactly what they're entering and all the deets on it.

I'm running a one-man show and I really don't care much about the legal point of view. If the contest turns out to be a failure (we'll see in a week), maybe this could become a thread suggesting artists for the job. Do you guys know any?

You might want to say something like: All image rights of the winning design transfer to you or Coral Live! or whatever. So you can use Dr. Albright however you want. Outside or in another game. I mean it's not like you'll be selling T-shirts with him on it. But if you wanted to then there would be no question that you could. No one could say "Hey, I didn't agree it could be used like that". Or if you saw someone else using it you could say that it was yours and put a stop to it.

For $50 I'd definitely be interested.

He's Dr. Albright, but he doesn't really need a labcoat, unless you want to add it. What I mean to say is, he's the one who run's the games and tells you what to do.

Well, people, the contest is almost officially over. If anyone for any reason has an unfinished drawing, send it nonetheless. I'm not evaluating completion, I'm evaluating design. The contest will be over Monday 12:00 PM.

I really wanted to enter, but didn't read this topic until yesterday at 2AM.
anyway, if you need more art, do consider me too. I'm a graphic designer, an artist, and currently studying to be an art teacher. being a poor student, 50$ for an art piece would be more than ok. I can send you my own design for a neuron mascot, along with samples of my art.
