i have ... 38 friends
and even then i feel like some of the people on the list are barely acquaintances. just accepted them b/c they asked and i figured i'd be nice and add them.
i'd say i have maybe 10 people on my list who i would ACTUALLY consider FRIEND-friends.

am i completely anti-normal on that? it doesn't bother me very much, but my mind boggles at the AVERAGE user knowing ~200 people well enough to share their personal lives etc with them.
might have bothered me as a teenager, i guess. luckily, there was no such thing for me back then. i wonder how important it is to kids today?
(actually, thinking back on my personality as a teen, i probably would have avoided all social networking like the plague. i was such a rebel )

I also don't use Facebook. I have it open so that I can see posts from University, study groups, and such.

i has 98 friends on facebook. maybe like 10-12 of them are people i talk to and hang out with. the rest are ether just family or people i went to school with

I don't use Facebook or Twitter, simply because I think it's a waste of time, I don't need to share every brainfart on the internet.

I've got around 30-40 people on Skype, I know most of them in real life, mostly friends and a few old classmates, but I've also got a few contacts whom I only know via the internet.
I do see some of them as my real friends though, imo it doesn't matter if you've met a person in the real world or not.

I also still use MSN sometimes but mostly to check whether I've got mail :p

Anyone who does this is doing it wrong. Facebook and Twitter are just like the new version of email. It's about contact. I personally use Facebook to contact the local council, Twitter to keep up on train disruptions, etc.

There are 5 of them I don't know in real life, and they're all members of this forum!

Of the remaining 64, I'd consider around 40 of them as my close friends that I can go out with and see them quite regularly, the other ones are people I know from school who I'm a little more distant with... so yeah.

I have 106 friends on Facebook but that number will probably go down to about 50 or so when I go to university and remove the people I don't talk to anymore.

Your average Facebook user will add every Tom, Dick and Harry that requests to be their friend. I had something like 250 friends but I came to the realization that I barely knew/never talked to the majority of them, was not a part of their lives, and did not associate with them. Ergo, why am I "friends" with them? They should redefine Facebook friends as "people you maybe talked to for 10 seconds at school or at a party."

Some people are obsessed with friend counts, though, which is ridiculous in every possible way. They literally think that having more friends on Facebook means you're a more sociable/better person. It means nothing but people will use it as an excuse to put themselves on a higher pedestal. "Oh, you only have 100 Facebook friends? I have 800 "

Bottom line? The only Facebook friends I have are the ones that I really care about. The ones I want to continue being friends with and to share my life with. Nobody has 500 friends that they maintain close, personal relationships with. 10 close friends > 100 acquaintances.

Social networking is mostly one giant popularity contest. Facebook friends mean fuck-all in the real world but there are millions of people that are desperately searching for ways to one-up their peers in the world's biggest dick-stroking. I love Facebook, but it really gives people the wrong idea about what kind of things we should value as a society. Being popular has nothing to do with if you're a good person or not. Facebook, intentionally or not, promotes the idea that instead of building strong, long-lasting relationships, we should focus more on having as many "friends" as possible, regardless of whether or not you care about those people.

And i use FB only as a media to reach people, for the aren't always answering their texts / whatsapp / calls, which bothers me, but i dont get to worked up about it.

About a third of them are family and friends of the family, another third are kids I met while I was in school (elementary, middle school, etc.), and the rest are kids I became cool with after meeting them at parties and/or friends I became cool with through other friends. I only have like 6 or 7 people I could call my best-best friends. Oh, and 3 of my friends are comic book-business related.

I don't really care for the number of friends I have. Honestly, it's not how many you know but WHO you know that matters.

223 people on Facebook, around 20 of them are people that are of the people I'd love to hand out with, cuase they're friends of varying degrees. Probably 20-40 more of them are people that I totally was friends with, except lost contact with in the past... idk, year(s), so they used to be friends. At least 50 to 75% of the rest are people that I know or know of, and maybe at most 20-50 peeps are people that I honestly don't know.

I don't have an issue with social networking and privacy. The things I keep private are not my name, pictures, address, and I'm p sure I didn't put my number up there. There are way less things to be anal about: if they want to stalk and screw me over, they can do that way too easily for me to give a shit about. Also, some of the sharing stuff is fun, sorta tumblr-ish in nature, although I don't give a shit about internet memes and tumblr bores me. Don't really care. There's a whole bunch of basic psychology at work here, such as the red-on-blue notification system that makes you want to keep getting more friends and notifications, and right now I'm just indulging myself.

I'll be trimming my friends list pretty hard sometime this year, particularly as I go into uni, but one of the main reasons I haven't done so is because at least 75% of my friends list are people I had fun times with but simply got disconnected. Realistically we won't be connecting again, but just in case, I just let them there. The trimming will take down probably 100 friends at least.

I had a myspace page then everyone moved to facebook. I use it to keep track of my sister, cause she doesn't bother to tell her family anything. Like once she posted that she was leaving in an hour to go out of state (with my car). I was upset since she didn't tell us her plans and I had just filled up the car with gas. So I drove off without telling her where I was going or when I'd be back.

Haha, the internet is silly. I use it mainly for a source of learning everything, and working my mind. I am not a very internet social person...I would much rather have a good conversation in person.

I have many freinds on facebook because I add nice people I get to know on different other sites (dating sites, other social media sites etc). But there are many school people I don't really need to have, but I think its all about curiosity, and my school are a bit more open, "everyone" knows each other. But I also have my classmates so I can contact them now after I graduate this summer:)

I don't actually use any social networking sites anymore, but when I did, I had maybe 150 friends. I'd purge them regularly and clear out the people I barely knew, though. I just don't really want to know the intimate details of the lives of people I don't care about. I regularly talk to everyone whose life I'm actually interested in anyway. So that's one reason I left. Another reason was I got tired of Facebook flagrantly disregarding privacy issues.

"Actual" is semantic. I consider most of them "friends". There are a few that I don't know, haven't met, or don't remember (high school).
But they range from ~a dozen "close" friends, to maybe ~50 "close acquaintances" (party with, hug when I see them, ...), then there's: people I would like to hang out with but don't because of geography or schedule, then people I would hang out with if coincidence crossed our paths.
What you're calling "ACTUAL", I think of as "CLOSE". It's a matter of perspective & philosophy. I'd like to think of everyone that is not my enemy as a 'friend' that I just don't know yet. That, however doesn't mean "blind trust", just benefit of the doubt.
